In math, we continued to explore our mathematical mindsets through a few more lessons of Jo Boaler's Week of Inspirational Math. When you visit 3F, take a look at our "take aways" from these activities. This week, we'll review addition and subtraction strategies thinking about how these operations go together. We'll practice fact families, word problems and how to visualize addition and subtraction. While some students (and parents) think the end goal is the standard algorithm (aka stacking, regrouping, the "way" we learned how to do it), it isn't necessarily the best fit for every mathematician. We will discuss ways that help students visualize rather than memorize an order of steps.
We will continue to learn about the geography of Massachusetts this week. We will focus on learning geography terms that can be found in Massachusetts and New England. We'll also start creating our own maps of Massachusetts!
Looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday morning! If we haven't connected about listening conferences, yet, please reach out. I'd love to hear about your third grader, your family and what your hopes are for the year. Information about listening conferences can be found in the Beginning of the Year section of our class webpage.
